What is it about?

Power-posing is a body-language technique designed to improve your confidence and reduce stress in just 2 minutes. The exercise consists of mimicking very confident and dominant postures called “high power poses” to temporarily boost your psychology.

The research

Power-Posing was popularized by Amy Cuddy, a social psychologist at Harvard Business School. In her study, individuals who were instructed to do high power poses became more confident, less anxious, and more willing to take risks. Those who were instructed to do low power poses shown less confidence, more stress and were less willing to gamble. The study proved that our body language not only affects how others perceive us, but also how we perceive ourselves and how we perform.

You can watch her TED talk where she explains how you can increase your confidence just by tweaking your body language.

High-power vs low-power

High power poses tend to be open, proud and expansive. They exude power and confidence. The most common high power poses are:

Low-power poses on the other hand, tend to be closed and guarded, making your body smaller. They exhibit insecurity and the need to protect yourself.

Power posing is quick, easy-to-do and applicable to many situations. You can do it:
  • every morning right out of bed
  • in front of a mirror before going to work
  • right before speaking in public, a big interview, a work presentation, a date…

You can even combine power-posing with a meditation technique every morning to feel relaxed, confident and jumpstart your day.

Next-time you come across a stressful situation, take 2 minutes to apply the power-posing technique. It can make a significant difference in your attitude, performance and overall success.
“Fake it. Do it not until you make it—but until you become it!”
